NY/CT HARDCORE CONNECTION CD REVIEW IN SUBURBAN REBELS ZINE

NY/CT HARDCORE CONNECTION COMPILATION - Another fine release on UNITED RIOT RECORDS, arranged and compiled by DENNIS F.U. and Johnny foz. Thirteen bands, twenty-five songs, that's a lot of music! Stand out bands for me are DRUG SHOCK (CT), who set the comp off, BROKEN (CT), BLASTMAT (CT), FED UP! (NY), CARNAGE KREW(NY), SIDE SWIPED(NY/CT), EVERYDAY DOLLARS (NY).. love these guys!! PROGRESS from CT end the comp and they rule too!! This is the ultimate Hardcore Compilation. It will really get you smashing shit. Dennis did a great job putting this together. I really like the fact that most of these bands aren't your typical Hardcore bands that get put on comps. Honestly, I only heard of a few bands on here, so it was great to discover some new hardcore. Comes with a two page fold out of band photos and nice artwork by Muna.

BAD ASSETS - THE SPIRIT OF DETROIT CD REVIEW IN NEUTRAL ACCENTS ZINE

Bare bones Oi!  from, as the title suggests Detroit. A tightly played record, focusing on the state of America and extinct American Dream. It is lyrically well written, tackling the problematic symptoms affecting numerous Midwestern cities and marks a definite throwback in sound to the distinct Detroit/Windsor bands of the 90's/ early 2000's. Much like a catchier Lager Lads and sounds of that ilk. Highlights include the anthemic "WASTED GENERATION" & the first track "PRIVILEGE PREVAIL". It's a competent record that would fill space on any diehard's playlist without too many skipped tracks.

FRONTLINE SOLDIERS - OATH OF LOYALTY REVIEW IN NEUTRAL ACCENTS ZINE

Formed in the front end of the 2000's FRONTLINE SOLDIERS were made up of members ot THE INFILTRATORS, SKIN DISORDER & OFFENSIVE WEAPON. This posthumous 5-song release documents a 2004 recording of this long defunct NYC Oi1 band. Closest in sound to fellow NYC-ers FISRT STIKE and even DC's counterattack. FRONTLINE SOLDIERS played a recgonizable style of primal, fundamental New York Oi! of the 5 songs, I'm a sucker for the bouncing bass lines (which are dominant on the Ep and an overall highlight of the band) that opener "American Boot Squad" lays down, repeat with "ABS" chanted chorus and marching backbeat. Other highlights are "Warrior Rising" and the closer "Frontline Soldiers." Hard and clean, you know what I mean? United Riot did a nice work with the presentation as well - with insert detailing the history of FLS, written by the same chap that did the design/layout, well-known local (to me) artist Muna. A nice addition to your collection.

VIBRAM 94 - YOU'LL NEVER TAKE US REVIEW IN MRR

VIBRAM 94 - YOU'LL NEVER TAKE US 7" EP Review in MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL # 353

Unreleased (until now) EP from this NY Oi! band recorded in, you guessed it, 1994. this EP sees Phil and Carl TEMPLAR filling in on drums and bass "Correction to this review Carl was on guitar, Taj was on Bass" and if it wasn't stated, it would be instantly recognizable by the playing and tones. Three and a half tracks of standard 1-2-1-2 American Oi!, reminiscent of the era and platters like Poor Knights of Acre, PATRIOT, STORMWATCH, and the first couple of BRUISERS EP's.

BAD ASSETS - SPIRIT OF DETROIT Review in RazorCake Zine

BAD ASSETS - THE SPIRIT OF DETROIT CD Review in Razorcake Zine #69

It's not everyday that a new band emerges with OXBLOOD as it's main influence but that's easily the best comparison for this hard, super catchy Detroit Oi! band. The vocals have that lovable food-in-the-mouth quality to them that gets me every time. The lyrics the the traditional working class themes found on countless prior oi albums but with the focus on current economic and social issues adding genuineness not always found on Oi or street punk releases. US Oi! developed its own hardcore-influenced feel over the years and BAD ASSETS borrows from that tradition. The production quality is especially studied and mixed with way less treble than albums from other punk subgenres. Anyone into skin sounds will get super excited by this totally kick ass new group. BAD ASSETS are anything but bad.

BAD ASSETS - THE SPIRIT OF DETROIT CD REVIEW IN SUBURBAN REBELS ZINE

BAD ASSETS Debut album is a breath of fresh air to the Oi! scene. Classic Old School Oi! with a splash of hardcore that truly sets the standard. "The Privileged Prevail" starts the album of with a fist to the face. The drums hit so hard on this album you know blood, sweat and tears went into this shit. Songs about the working class like "Factory Rat" is a song the common man can relate to, unless your just a lazy waste of space. "Too Far" took me to the streets of Detroit and what a dangerous place it really is. "Next Stop - Nowhere" is the truth of struggles we deal with every day. This song I can fully relate to. Definitely one of my favorites. "Detroit Diamonds" might be the ultimate skinhead anthem tune. Great gang vocals and lyrics of policing your own streets and putting the boot in!! "What's Due" is the last song and ends it nicely. It's about how the working class is fucked due to the politics of today. Great guitar solos and Ralph might have one of the best sounding voices in Oi! The album sounds really good also at a production level. This isn't any demo kids! It's a well polished record that will stand the test of time! Oi!

BAD ASSETS - SPIRIT OF DETROIT REVIEW IN BACKSTREET BATTALION ZINE

BAD ASSETS - SPIRIT OF DETROIT CD REVIEW IN BACKSTREET BATTALION

Debut album of brand new US band from industrial city of Detroit and their new album released on United Riot Records – one of the most active US labels of nowadays. Band plays in classical four piece line-up with guitar, bass, drums and vocals. On album you can listen to 11 songs and playtime is circa half hour. Musically it is brickwall Oi!, typical sound of US bands with rough vocal. Lyrics of Bad Assets are very socially critical and I think that it is very hard to be a worker of Detroit nowadays and feed the family. So there are lyrics about the unbreakable pride of workers (Factory Rat), description of Detroit streets (Too Far), laws and regulations which are saving big companies but not their workers (Bailout), privileged people who doesn´t need to care about the paying of their rent and debts (The Privileged Prevail) or about the bad future of US social system (Whats Due). Songs like Wasted Generation or Too Far are great hits. Booklet is done in cooperation with Muna, it has only two pages but it contains all lyrics and thankslist of each band member. Under the CD and on the back side of the cover are some band photos. Who likes harder bands like Bonecrusher or Maddog Surrender dor example will like also Bad Assets.

FRONTLINE SOLDIERS - OATH OF LOYALTY Ep Review in Razorcake Zine

FRONTLINE SOLDIERS - OATH OF LOYALTY Ep Review in Razorcake Zine #67

FRONTLINE SOLDIERS: Oath of Loyalty: 7" EP
Ever fall in love with a band that never recorded? Or hear a comp with an amazing song from an artist that never put anything else out?
Each and every subgenre of punk is full of lost bands and unreleased gems. The world of oi is no exception to that rule, especially since so many people move in and out of that hyper-specific subculture.
Recorded around a decade ago, but not released until now, Oath of Loyalty collects all of the material Frontline Soldiers ever
recorded, except for their legendary track on 2004's Streets of
America comp. Lean and mean, with a spirited hardcore slant,
Frontline Soldiers owe a lot to their N.Y.C. brethren Oxblood. This fantastic EP is a time warp to the exciting oi/street punk revival boom of the 1990s. It's frustrating to think of what other tapes are collecting dust in studios around the world. Now I'm getting nostalgic for records that don't even exist. How fucking postmodern is that? -Art Ettinger (United Riot, unitedriotrecords.com)

DOWNLOW NYHC Review in BACKSTREET BATALION ZINE

DOWNLOW NYHC Review in BACKSTREET BATALION ZINE
Downlow NYHC is according to the name hardcore band founded in 1994 and this is re-release of their debut album (I am not counting previous songs which featured on compilations) from 1998 (it was released by Eyeball Records for the first time). In 1998 they were disbanded but they regroup in 2003 and they are playing live time to time. Their members play or used to play in bands like Cause for Alarm, New Faith or Kill Your Idols. CD/EP contains 6 songs (No more Pain, Change of Pace, Wall of Anger, Diseased, Blindfolded and Refrain) of angry HC in style of Warzone, Agnostic Front, Breakdown, Sheer Terror or Cro Mags. I can describe it as pure old school sound with no touches of metal core or nu metal. Lyrics are about HC themes like sticking together, anger, pain, hate, talking behind someone´s back or emotions in general. All songs are on same level and I really like them (I was little bit afraid when I heard beginning of song called Blindfolded which is really fast and little bit strange for me but after 20 seconds you will hear expected HC) CD is dedicated to Raybeez (band played benefit show for his family in 1998), to Javi Savage (owner of Big City Records, which released many HC and punk albums and who passed away in 1994) and to others who aren´t with us anymore. Thankslist contains many well known bands and persons from HC and punk scene. Booklet has two pages with live photos and lyrics. Graphics is done again by JM Designs. Limited again to 300 copies so really clear choice for fans of old school HC.

DOWNLOW NYHC - WALL OF ANGER CD REVIEW IN JERSEY BEAT ZINE

DOWNLOW NYHC - WALL OF ANGER CD REVIEW IN JERSEY BEAT ZINE
The guys in Downlow NYHC have been kicking around since the early 90’s, and despite line-up shifts, temporarily disbanding, and fighting off the many trends that infiltrated hardcore, the band stays devoted to the early 80’s style that defined New York legends such as Agnostic Front and Sick of it All. The band roars through six tracks here, but none of them are blinding bursts of noise in an effort to see how quickly the band can play. Instead, Downlow NYHC takes the time to construct well articulated songs, replete with tempo shifts and class two-step grooves on “Change of Pace” and “Diseased”. Granted, the thirty-seven second “Breakdownlow” abandons this model for a track that seems to invoke the spirit of Seth Putnam for a few seconds, but then it is back to basics on “Blindfolded”. The music here is for two aficionados of a classic hardcore sound. The guitar playing is thick and deceivingly harmonious, the drumming is barbarian in its fury, and Joe Downlow has the definitive vocal style of New York’s Lower East Side. It is a shame this band now must be mentioned in the past tense for they are excellent example of pure hardcore musicianship and intensity.

Strong Island Boot Boys - Pitbull Breed 7" Review in Backstreet Battalion Zine

Strong Island Boot Boys - Pitbull Breed 7" Review in Backstreet Battalion Zine

UNITED RIOT RECORDS/UNDER WATCHFUL EYES - EP -

United Riot Records has started with releasing forgotten demo records from US Oi! and HC bands like Frontline Soldiers, NY Hoods or Strong Island Boot Boys for example in EP format. This is five songs demo recorded back in 2005 under the name Guilty and this is also only thing recorded by the band because one of their members moved to Chile. Other band members are nowadays around the bands like Offensive Weapon, Fed Up! or Skin Disorder. Demo was recorded in three and one member (Al) recorded guitar and also drums. EP is opened by instrumental intro called S.I.B.B. Stomp and on side A are two more songs called Scared of No One and Guilty, on side B are songs called United Skins and Pitbull Breed. Music is typical school of US Oi! – brickwall Oi! with significant bass line and faster and slower parts so fans of bands such as Stormwatch, Battle Cry or Oxblood will surely like it. Most of all I like both songs on B side. EP was released in several colour combinations (but these were just for those who made pre-order so I have “just” the black one). Cover design is made by Muna and inside is just EP with no lyrics and on the back side are band photos. Likeable piece from United Riot Records which isn´t surely the last “lost” record released in that way.

FED UP! - LIVE AT WFMU 7" Review on INEFFECT ZINE

FED UP! "LIVE AT WFMU" 7" (PUNK ROCK DISTRO/WELFARE RECORDS, RELEASED 2011

The Pat Duncan show on NJ’s WFMU has flown under the radar for what seems like an eternity. Playing underground hardcore/punk, hosting interviews of bands and ex fanzine editors (including yours truly) and in this case having bands play live on the air. On February 5, 2009 it was Fed Up on on the show and this 7” captures the nights festivities. For those unfamiliar with Fed Up they play straight up old style hardcore in the vein of early Warzone/Cause For Alarm with a dash of humor tossed in from time to time. Nothing fancy, just in your face, and most of their stuff is really catchy… just check out their “Sheer Poetry” CD from 2010 on United Riot Records for proof. Love the layout on this short 7” with a little intro paying homage to Pat Duncan and all the help he has given to bands plus a few candid shots of the band at the studio. Looks like they played 13 songs this night and you get 7 of them here and must say a pretty good recording for a live on the radio set. Worth noting the bands lighter/funnier side as the between song banter between songs had me cracking up with personal cheap shots aimed at friends/and or other band members. Worth a check.

FRONTLINE SOLDIERS - OATH OF LOYALTY 7" Ep Review in Empty Hands Zine

FRONTLINE SOLDIERS - OATH OF LOYALTY 7" Ep Review in Empty Hands Zine

Frontline Soldiers were a NYC Oi! band that began in 2000. This 7" is a recording from a 2004 session, which preceded their break up. It was dropped in 2011 after hibernating in the United Riot Records vault. FLS have a tough, low end Oi! sound that stomps the trademark of NYC on the ears. The production is solid. Good bass presence as is essential in a good Oi! sound. The mix is tight and brings all the levels together to be quite a force. It's a tough, gritty sound. It truly holds a US Oi! sound.

"Warrior Rising" especially incorporates a hardcore sound. The band tends to speed it up more often than not. Fast paced oi is invigorating and refreshing. The slow paced paced bands in constant homage to late 80s US oi tend to bore me I think that this is where the NYC really comes out. You can't be a skin there without loving punk and hardcore. And all this said - as i work to do a FFO analogy....nothing really fits perfectly. So i would say while a band can get an "Oi!" moniker where most would write off as generic; FLS really has a great, unique sound.

5 songs on this puppy and they are great ones. "American Boot Squad" starts it off and is the stand out track. Aggressive feel with a guitar part that drives it and grabs the listener. Strong musicianship all around. Fresh sound with tough power to a great production. Pick it up. Available on grey/red splatter vinyl. And again, JM Designs kills it with traditional American images.

FFO: Run Like Hell, Counterattack, FatSkins, The Traditionals. ...(Obviously)the NYC bands: First Strike, Battle Cry, Oxblood
