FIRST SHIT FIRST BRO WHO IS IN A KILLING TRADITION AND WHO DOES WHAT ?
Many have come and gone over the years, but ultimately you have the psychopath who started it all the Reverend Jake Sleeze on guitar/vocals/slapping whores around. The old yet wise CJ Creeps on bass/vocals/general creepiness and perversion and The madman, yours truly, Bobby Butcher on vocals/violence and the heterosexual Dahmer of central Florida.
HOW DID YOU GUYS COME UP WITH THE NAME A KILLING TRADITION AND WERE THERE OTHER NAMES CONSIDERED ?
The band was originally called Incinerator with classic hits such as only good whore is a dead one. The name A Killing Tradition came about a few years ago paying tribute to The Murder Junkies and captures the true essence of who we are and what we are about.
WHAT SORT OF MUSICAL STYLE DO YOU THINK A KILLING TRADITION PLAYS AND IF SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER HEARD YOU, WHAT BAND WOULD YOU SAY YOU SORT OF SOUND LIKE ?
This is a tough question because we all listen to a shitload of different music. I'd say we sound like an untalented mish mash of the bands that influence us the most. GG Allin, The Murder Junkies, The Mentors, Antiseen, Dayglo Abortions and other raunchy shit. While inspired we do not try to write songs that sound like any of them and our music stands on its own because of that otherwise you might as well go pick up records by those bands and forget about us. We didn't invent the wheel and we are not trying to reinvent it either. More just carrying the torch and trying to get a bunch of bands together again to fly under the same banner. People this day in age are so hypersensitive about everything. We set out to piss off people in the "scene" and we can care less if 20 people come out to a show or 500. We do this on our terms and we will never cater to or bow to anyone whether it's a label, promoter, club owner, people in the crowd, people complaining online, the protesters outside the venue. Fuck everyone and anyone who has an issue with us. They are the disease and we are the cure.
WHO WRITES THE LYRICS FOR A KILLING TRADITION AND WHATS THE SHIT THEY USUALLY DEAL WITH ?
The main lyricist is The Reverend Jake Sleeze, You need a truly fucked up moral compass and mind to pump our lyrics out. CJ Creeps has written some and though I can deliver what is written, I have never been a poet laureate and don't pretend to be. I've been known to make up and change lyrics on the spot. I get into the music and forget where the fuck I am sometimes. We deal with songs about love, peace and harmony and how to raise your credit score by creating good spending habits and saving at least 20% of your paycheck.
WHEN YOURE NOT DOING BAND RELATED THINGS WHATS THE SHIT YOU LOVE TO DO ?
I hang out on bike paths, hiking trails, rest areas, the red light district, certain night clubs or bars if I have stuff to slip in women's drinks and if I am feeling adventurous I'll just walk right through the front door and surprise them. Lately I've added political gatherings as a great place to pick up unsuspecting ladies. You'd be surprised what you can get away with at a feminist rally or when the shit is going down when ANTIFA is busy trying to fight old ladies.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE A TYPICAL LIVE SHOW FROM A KILLING TRADITION ?
We always go out and give it our everything. It largely depends on who is there and what the stage is like. I prefer no stage or low stages. I want to get out there and punch people in the face. There are no safe areas at a killing tradition show. If safety is your number one concern, move into a retirement community you fucking weak piece of shit.
WHATS THE MOST VIOLENT SHIT YOU EVER SEEN AT ONE OF THE A KILLING TRADITION SHOWS ?
Our brother Matt Hovey from Fisted Sister broke his leg and ankle at our last show, 1 of my favorite sets was at Matt Gioia's party in the everglades. We fought, people throwing shit, people dancing with fire and whatnot. Great Times!
WHATS YOUR PREFERRED METHOD OF KILLING HUMANS ?
Different scenarios mean different plans. Does she work out? Is she out of shape? Is she asleep? is she going to fight back? So many variables and you need to be ready for all of them! If you want to get caught you will get caught. Be smart and stay vigilant. Just remember, the fat ones never fit in the woodchipper.
DOES THE BAND AS A WHOLE PRETTY MUCH GET ALONG AND TELL ME A GOOD FUNNY STORY ABOUT A KILLING TRADITION ?
Bands and Serial Killers in general are ego maniacs and personalities of this nature clash. Controlled Chaos. Sometimes it boils over and someone gets hurt. Especially drummers. Don't believe me? Ask anyone. As for funny Stories? We had a women's advocacy group show up to protest in Fort Myers because our show was titled "make it legal to beat your wife". They come up and ask to come into the venue without paying, person at the door told them to pay the cover. They couldn't afford it and instead of protesting outside like any sane man with logic would do, they went home to scissor each other and plan their manifesto to try and keep men neutered and in their place, like the true childlike emotional beings they are.
WHAT WERE SOME OF THE EARLY BAND PRACTICES LIKE AND HOW EASY OR HARD WAS IT WRITING TUNES BACK THEN ?
I was lucky enough to not have to be a part of the very early practices and took over on vocals after 2 live shows (though I wish I played those 2 first shows 1st being with the mentors and the 2nd 2 days later with the murder junkies!) When things did not work out with their 1st singer I was asked to make A Killing Tradition great again. Since then we have released Free Wayne Henley on United Riot Records on cd and vinyl. We are currently writing our first full length. We play shows in between mainly because we love to be able to offend in person.
WHATS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING IN A BAND AND WHATS THE WORST THING ABOUT BEING IN A BAND ?
Playing live is my favorite aspect of being in a band. I love not knowing what is going to happen. We have pissed of people we know and thought could handle our antics. We have cleared out the venue and I have run outside and hit people (joys of a cordless mic). We have people come and sing along and looking to kill each other as well and every aspect of it makes it worth it. The only thing I don't like about being in a band is the amount of money it takes to keep it going, but it gives us more excuses to go out and fuck people over and rob them blind every chance we get.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE AND A LEAST FAVORITE OR DO YOU PRETTY MUCH LOVE ALL THE SONGS THAT A KILLING TRADITION HAS RECORDED ?
Every song has its place and though not all hit singles none are filler. We would never release a song just to get something out there. We are not motley crue releasing theatre of pain. We are a fucking killing tradition.
HOW FAR WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THE BAND GO AND DO YOU HAVE ANY GOALS AS A BAND ?
Our goals are met, not because we have low standards far from it. We do this for us and if we are having a good time then it is worth it. If others catch on and want to take part in real music whether that means no money or millions of dollars then come out to the shows, form bands and play shows with us. Don't be a little bitch who cares about what everyone else thinks. What's the fucking point. Trends come and go while Scum Rock remains here to stay.
